Experiencing doubts? Me too.
Doubt. It's a real thing. Let me just be a basic white girl for a moment and say #thestruggleisreal (so sorry for that hehe). However, although I am sure most everyone struggles with having doubts, should we? Is having doubt actually harmless?
For the last few years doubt has been something that I have really struggled with, but before three months ago, I had given it little thought. I knew that I never enjoyed doubting things, especially my faith, and I figured it wasn't good for me, but I never really knew why. By the Lord's grace, I now have some idea as to why doubting is not good, and not only why it isn't good, but why it is actually sinful. I am by no means an expert on the subject of doubt, but I will offer the little knowledge that I have gleaned.
The definition of doubt, according to the dictionary, is "to be uncertain about; consider questionable or unlikely; hesitate to believe."
The Lord calls us to abide in Him and trust His plans for our lives completely. Doubting, is essentially, questioning the Lord. It is saying that we might have something better in mind for ourselves, or our lives, then even God has for us. Saying that we might know better or know more, essentially belittling God's sovereignty.
This way of thinking is harmful to our faith, and a lot of other things in our lives. A train of wrong thoughts can stem from having one single wrong thought, especially about God. What we believe about God is essential to how we live and view God. If we have wrong thoughts about God, there is no way we can view ourselves rightly, or view God rightly. It is vital to correct our wrong thinking about God in order to experience Him to the fullest and give Him complete and total glory in all of our life.
From personal experience, I know that I have questioned whether my doubting meant I didn't have a real faith. That maybe my faith was superficial. By God's grace, I have now learned that doubting does not mean lack or loss of faith, doubting is actually proof that you have a faith. No one doubts something that they don't believe in. However, while it doesn't mean you don't have a faith, it does mean that your faith is weak.
So how should we counteract this doubting, or belittling of God's sovereignty? Get in the word. Start praying. Start feeding yourself with the truth of God's word. God gave us His word for the purpose of learning more about Him, so naturally, reading it should remind us of His total sovereignty. By God's grace, we can learn to fix our thinking and start viewing God rightly, as the completely sovereign God that He is.
